Refugee Employments in Malaysia

Writer: Hands of HopeHands of Hope

Do refugees have the right to work?

As Malaysia did not sign the 1951 UN Convention, refugees do not have the right to seek employment. One of the major problems of not having the right to work is being forced to turn to 3D Jobs – dirty, dangerous, and difficult. Examples of these include excessive labour at construction sites or cleaning sectors.

Since refugees are working illegally, they are not entitled to minimum wage or any labour rights. Because of this, they are at risk of underpayment or no payment at all. If accidents do occur especially in the construction sector, they will not be covered by insurance.
